A journey through the history of hats: From the tricorn to the top hat!
The elegance and splendor of the 18th century
No other hat defined the 18th century like the tricorn , which was worn in various sizes and styles by both nobility and the bourgeoisie. Especially during the Rococo era, it was often elaborately decorated with braid, feathers, and cockades.
At the same time, the bicorn hat became established, becoming extremely popular, especially in the military and later during the Napoleonic era , not least due to Napoleon himself. These hats were not only protection from sun, wind, and weather, but also an indispensable accessory that emphasized the wearer's social or military rank and fashion sense.
The 19th century: diversity and change
The 19th century saw an even greater variety of hat styles. The simpler, yet impressive top hat dominated men's fashion from the early 19th century onward and became a symbol of the rising middle class. Whether as an elegant walking top hat or an imposing Biedermeier top hat with a flared crown, the top hat exuded seriousness and dignity.
For women, hat fashion evolved over the course of the century from simple bonnets to elaborate hat creations adorned with bows, flowers, and feathers. The chapeau claque , a collapsible top hat, also became a practical accessory for social occasions, later making its grand appearance in show business during the 1920s .
In the military, the peaked cap or officer's cap gradually became established as a symbol of military rank. Often highly decorated with emblems, it remains ubiquitous on modern battlefields. However, the peaked cap also has civilian uses. In aviation and shipping, for example, captains still wear this distinctive hat style today.
