Top hat
A journey through time: The top hat – yesterday a symbol, today a statement
Originating in the late 18th century, the top hat revolutionized men's hat fashion. Initially worn as a symbol of nonconformist bourgeois values, it quickly evolved in the 19th century into an indispensable symbol of status, wealth, and elegance. Whether in its stately height as a "stovepipe top" or in more moderate styles, the top hat shaped the image of the stylish gentleman for both day and evening occasions.
Materials such as fine beaver felt, luxurious silk, and shimmering melusine defined its appearance, while variations like the practical collapsible top hat, the chapeau claque , found their way into ballrooms and theaters. The top hat was more than just protection from wind and weather; it was an expression of social standing and individual taste.
Nothing has changed in this regard to this day, and we, as a traditional hat manufacturer from Altenburg, are proud to still offer the top hat in many styles as the core of our hat portfolio. We are both a classic craft business and a modern top hat shop where you can easily find the right hat model and place an order directly.

The different forms of the top hat
Not all cylinders are created equal – throughout history, different variations have developed, each with its own aesthetic and meaning. Among the best-known forms are:
-
Classic top hat:
The timeless classic with a high, straight crown and narrow brim. Worn primarily by gentlemen in the 19th century, but still popular today for weddings, galas, and historical costumes. -
Opera cylinder (folding cylinder):
The so-called " Chapeau Claque " can be folded and was once the perfect accessory for opera and theater visits. Practical and elegant at the same time. One of our absolute specialties, as we still manufacture the Chapeau Claque in our workshop according to the original design. -
Victorian top hat:
Slightly taller than the classic top hat and often with a curved crown edge. This style is particularly popular in reenactments and historical displays .
The traditional hat-making craft – step by step
Every top hat that leaves our workshop is meticulously handcrafted – a process that demands experience, precision, and dedication. Here's an overview of the key steps:
-
Selection of materials:
For a high-quality cylinder, we use fine wool felt, hair felt, or silk plush. These materials combine malleability with elegance and durability. -
Shaping the blank:
Steam and pressure are used to stretch the felt over a wooden form – depending on the desired hat shape. This step, known as "stretching," requires experience and a delicate touch. -
Drying & Firming:
After shaping, the blank is dried and treated with special hat stiffeners. This gives the top hat its characteristic stability. -
Brim finishing:
The brim is cut, ironed into shape, and, if desired, turned up or curved. This determines the final shape of the hat. -
Interior features:
The lining, sweatband, and size band are carefully sewn in. The manufacturer's logo is also included – a sign of genuine handcraftsmanship. -
Fine work & decoration:
Finally, the hat receives its grosgrain ribbon, a bow, feather or other accessories – individually tailored to the wearer or the desired design.
