The bespoke blue justaucorps – elegance crafted by master hands

The justaucorps – that knee-length men's coat which dominated European men's fashion from the late 17th to the 18th century!

Underneath a justaucorps, one typically wore an ensemble considered a precursor to the modern three-piece suit. This consisted of:

1. A waistcoat: Directly beneath the justaucorps, a long waistcoat was worn, often of a similar length to the justaucorps itself or even covering it completely. These waistcoats could also be richly decorated and made of contrasting or matching fabrics.
2. Breeches: These were close-fitting breeches that reached just below the knee.
3. A shirt: Although not always explicitly the focus of outward appearance, a shirt made of linen or fine cotton was the base layer. Visible parts of the shirt, such as the sleeve ruffles or the jabot (a kind of lace tie or flounce at the neckline), were often elaborately designed and contributed to the overall elegance.

The justaucorps itself was therefore the outer layer of this multi-piece outfit. It was often worn open or buttoned only at the top to show off the waistcoat underneath and the embellishments of the shirt.
